What Is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures a student’s academic performance during one semester or academic term.

SGPA is usually calculated using the grade points and credit hours of all subjects completed during that semester.

SGPA Formula

SGPA = Total Credit Points Earned in a Semester ÷ Total Semester Credit Hours

Credit points for each subject are calculated as:

Credit Points = Subject Grade Point × Subject Credit Hours

SGPA Example

Suppose a student completes the following subjects:

SubjectGrade PointCredit HoursCredit Points
Mathematics8.0324.0
Physics7.5430.0
English8.5217.0
Computer Science9.0327.0

Total credit points = 98

Total credit hours = 12

SGPA = 98 ÷ 12

SGPA = 8.17

This result represents the student’s academic performance for that particular semester.

What Is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents a student’s overall academic performance across multiple semesters.

While SGPA measures one semester, CGPA combines the results of all completed semesters into one cumulative score.

CGPA is commonly shown on academic transcripts, degree records, university applications, resumes, scholarship forms, and employment documents.

For example, if a student receives the following SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 3.20
  • Semester 2: 3.40
  • Semester 3: 3.60

The CGPA can be estimated by calculating the average:

CGPA = (3.20 + 3.40 + 3.60) ÷ 3

CGPA = 3.40

SGPA vs CGPA

Although SGPA and CGPA both measure academic performance, they cover different periods.

SGPA helps students understand how they performed during a particular semester. CGPA provides a broader view of their overall progress throughout the course or degree program.

How Does the SGPA to CGPA Calculator Work?

The SGPA to CGPA Calculator combines the SGPA results entered for different semesters and calculates their average.

To use the calculator:

  1. Select the grading scale used by your institution.
  2. Enter your first semester SGPA.
  3. Add more semester fields as required.
  4. Enter the SGPA for each completed semester.
  5. Click the calculate button.
  6. Review your estimated CGPA and calculation breakdown.

You can also use the total SGPA method by entering the sum of all semester SGPAs and the total number of semesters.

The calculator should only be used when all entered SGPAs follow the same grading scale. Do not mix results from different grading scales.

SGPA to CGPA Formula

The correct formula depends on whether all semesters have equal academic weight or different total credit hours.

Method 1: Simple Average of Semester SGPAs

If all semesters have equal weight, use the following formula:

CGPA = Sum of All Semester SGPAs ÷ Total Number of Semesters

Example

Suppose a student has the following SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 8.20
  • Semester 2: 7.80
  • Semester 3: 8.50
  • Semester 4: 7.90

Total SGPA:

8.20 + 7.80 + 8.50 + 7.90 = 32.40

Number of semesters:

4

CGPA:

32.40 ÷ 4 = 8.10

Final CGPA = 8.10

Method 2: Total SGPA and Number of Semesters

If you already know the total sum of all semester SGPAs, use:

CGPA = Total SGPA ÷ Total Number of Semesters

Example

Total of all SGPAs = 27.60

Total semesters = 4

CGPA = 27.60 ÷ 4

CGPA = 6.90

Make sure the value entered as total SGPA is the sum of all semester SGPAs, not the SGPA of only one semester.

Method 3: Credit-Weighted CGPA

A simple average may not produce the official CGPA when semesters have different total credit hours.

In that case, use the credit-weighted formula:

CGPA = Sum of (Semester SGPA × Semester Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

Weighted CGPA Example

SemesterSGPACredit HoursWeighted Points
Semester 18.0018144.00
Semester 27.5020150.00
Semester 38.4022184.80

Total weighted points = 478.80

Total credit hours = 60

CGPA = 478.80 ÷ 60

CGPA = 7.98

In this example, the official CGPA is 7.98 because semesters with more credit hours have a greater effect on the cumulative result.

SGPA to CGPA Examples

Example 1: CGPA on a 4.0 Scale

Semester SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 3.10
  • Semester 2: 3.30
  • Semester 3: 3.50
  • Semester 4: 3.40

Formula:

CGPA = (3.10 + 3.30 + 3.50 + 3.40) ÷ 4

CGPA = 13.30 ÷ 4

CGPA = 3.33

Example 2: CGPA on a 5.0 Scale

Semester SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 4.10
  • Semester 2: 4.25
  • Semester 3: 4.00

Formula:

CGPA = (4.10 + 4.25 + 4.00) ÷ 3

CGPA = 12.35 ÷ 3

CGPA = 4.12

Example 3: CGPA on a 7.0 Scale

Semester SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 5.80
  • Semester 2: 6.10
  • Semester 3: 5.90
  • Semester 4: 6.20

Formula:

CGPA = (5.80 + 6.10 + 5.90 + 6.20) ÷ 4

CGPA = 24.00 ÷ 4

CGPA = 6.00

Example 4: CGPA on a 10.0 Scale

Semester SGPAs:

  • Semester 1: 7.40
  • Semester 2: 7.80
  • Semester 3: 8.10
  • Semester 4: 8.30
  • Semester 5: 8.50
  • Semester 6: 8.20

Formula:

CGPA = (7.40 + 7.80 + 8.10 + 8.30 + 8.50 + 8.20) ÷ 6

CGPA = 48.30 ÷ 6

CGPA = 8.05

Understanding Different Grading Scales

The grading scale determines the maximum possible SGPA and CGPA.

4.0 Grading Scale

The 4.0 scale is commonly used by universities in several countries. On this scale, 4.0 is generally the highest possible grade point.

Example values include:

  • 4.00
  • 3.75
  • 3.20
  • 2.80

A CGPA of 3.20 out of 4.0 is different from 3.20 out of 10.0.

5.0 Grading Scale

Some universities and education systems use a 5-point grading scale.

On this scale:

  • Maximum CGPA: 5.00
  • Example SGPA: 4.20
  • Example CGPA: 4.05

7.0 Grading Scale

A 7.0 grading scale is used by certain universities and academic systems.

On this scale:

  • Maximum CGPA: 7.00
  • Example SGPA: 5.80
  • Example CGPA: 6.10

10.0 Grading Scale

The 10.0 scale is widely used by many schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutions.

On this scale:

  • Maximum CGPA: 10.00
  • Example SGPA: 8.40
  • Example CGPA: 8.05

Always select the same scale used on your official semester result or transcript.

Can You Average SGPAs to Calculate CGPA?

You can calculate CGPA by averaging semester SGPAs when:

  • All semesters use the same grading scale.
  • All semesters have equal weight.
  • Your institution allows a simple average.
  • Semester credit-hour differences are not considered.
  • All entered values are official semester SGPAs.

A simple average may not be suitable when:

  • Semesters have different total credit hours.
  • Some courses carry additional weight.
  • Failed or repeated courses receive special treatment.
  • The institution uses yearly or program-specific weightings.
  • Transfer credits are included.
  • Some semesters are excluded from the final CGPA.

For official results, follow your institution’s academic regulations.

Why Is CGPA Important?

CGPA provides a cumulative summary of academic performance. It may be used for:

  • University admissions
  • Postgraduate applications
  • Scholarship eligibility
  • Internship applications
  • Job applications
  • Academic honors
  • Merit lists
  • Exchange programs
  • Transfer applications
  • Graduation requirements

A strong CGPA may help demonstrate consistent academic performance. However, universities and employers may also review subject grades, projects, skills, experience, test scores, and other qualifications.

How to Improve Your CGPA

Improving CGPA usually requires consistent performance across future semesters.

Set a Realistic Target

Calculate the SGPA needed in upcoming semesters and make sure the target is achievable within your grading scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SGPA to CGPA Calculator?

An SGPA to CGPA Calculator combines semester-wise grade point averages and calculates an estimated cumulative grade point average.

Is CGPA the average of all SGPAs?

CGPA can be the simple average of all SGPAs when each semester has equal academic weight. If credit hours differ, a weighted calculation may be required.

Can I calculate CGPA from only one SGPA?

If only one semester has been completed, the SGPA and CGPA may be the same. A meaningful cumulative average normally requires results from multiple semesters.

Can SGPA be higher than CGPA?

Yes. A strong result in one semester may produce an SGPA higher than the cumulative CGPA. This can gradually improve the overall CGPA.

Can CGPA be higher than the latest SGPA?

Yes. If previous semester results were stronger, the cumulative CGPA may remain higher than the latest SGPA.

Does every semester affect CGPA equally?

Not always. Semesters may have different credit totals. Universities that use credit-based calculations give more weight to semesters containing more credits.
